Abandoned Event 2007

Friday 10th of August 2007 marked an exciting day as 140 people gathered to get a taster of what it is to be ‘abandoned’, for the official launch of the new Guernsey charity 'Hope for a Child'. They traded in their beds for cardboard and spent the night under the stars in St Peter Port’s sunken gardens.

Why? We hear you ask. Because we wanted to show people why Hope for a Child exists. It seemed that giving 140 individuals the opportunity to step into the shoes of those that we aim to help, was an excellent way to do this, gaining just a minute taster of what it is like to be ‘abandoned’. It was also a chance for Guernsey people to come and help us raise £20,000, which is being used for projects with orphaned and vulnerable children in Africa & China.

We know it is essential for everyone living in the Western world to consider those who don’t share the same benefits as we do. We were delighted to see so many people joining us in their boxes in August last year.

It was a huge privilege to have our Lieutenant Governor, Sir Fabian Malbon supporting the event, inspecting the troops in their boxes. There was  great TV and radio coverage.

We will be repeating the event on a larger scale this year on 29th August 2008 at the Vale Castle in Guernsey. See you there!!
