| | In 2010 the estimated number of children orphaned by causes including famine, disease, conflict and HIV/AIDS will exceed 50 million in sub-Saharan Africa. Our aim is to provide children like these with hope. We believe that we will be able to help 1 million vulnerable and orphaned children in the region by 2018 by working in partnership with their extended families, churches and communities. Ambitious? Yes. Impossible? We don’t think so.
We believe that children who are vulnerable or orphaned are best cared for in a loving family situation, ideally within the extended family and local community rather than institutions. It is estimated that this is already happening in the case of over 90% of children in the region. But those families are in need of support. And that’s where we come in.
We want to
Ensure that children are cared for within a family network rather than institutions So we intend to
Help families to rise out of poverty by Supporting the setting up of community managed savings and loan schemes, business mentoring and skills training which will Enable families to have a sustainable livelihood So that they can
Feed, house, clothe, educate and pay for health care for all of the children in their care without having to rely on hand outs.
|
| We want to
Mobilize social welfare workers to provide monitoring, counselling, training and support to those families in order to
Strengthen family and community safety nets to cope with children made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS and other problems So that they can
Give the spiritual, emotional and psychosocial support these children need. We want to
Deliver projects through partnership with local churches, and other grassroots community organizations So that we can
Build strong local relationships, promoting sustainable, replicable development Be accountable and transparent in accounting and business activities Work with Christian values Work in communities regardless of their ethnic origin or religious beliefs The current situation in sub-Saharan Africa has been described as 'an orphan crisis without historical precedent.' Of all the children currently under 18 who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS worldwide, 12 million live in sub-Saharan Africa, 80% of the world's total. We believe that we can make a difference to one million of those vulnerable children within the next ten years. Ambitious? Yes. Impossible? We don’t think so. |
