SPRODETA Transport Business

Partner: Small Producers Development and Transporter’s Association

Outline

We have provided a loan to our partner SPRODETA to start a transportation business. This venture is proving very successful, supplying a steady income source for their projects in the community and meeting their operational costs.

Our impact in Malawi is dependent on the health and vitality of the the in-country partner organisations we work with. This is why we use some of our time and resources to help them to grow, and become increasingly stable and secure.

Our partners are non-governmental organisations (NGOs) made up of hard working, knowledgeable and passionate people. They share our values, and exist to make the lives of people in rural Malawi better. We work closely with them to deliver all of our projects, because we believe that local people should be at the forefront of development work in a country.

They provide some of the important services that the government currently does not have the capacity to deliver, to overcome many of the challenges facing children.

This is why we use some of our time and resources to help them to grow, and become increasingly stable and secure.

A big challenge for NGOs in Malawi is funding. They are often relient on donors based in Europe or North America.

Unfortunately this funding model is often unsustainable due to unpredictable flows of funding. NGOs can also feel like they are dependent on the whims of distant organisations, who may not have a full picture of conditions on the ground.

Having a more stable income, which they can control and use for what they discern to be the greatest needs, means that NGOs can become more effective, because they are free to deliver services that are tailored to the unique needs of of communities.

In light of this, at Hope for a Child we are increasing our impact by enabling our partners to become more financially independent, by helping them to develop their own income streams.

We provided a loan to our partner SPRODETA to purchase a used bus. They are now operating a transport business, which is providing a source of income that they can use for their projects in the community, or to meet their operational costs.

18 months later, after a period of successful business operation, we have provided SPRODETA with a second loan to purchase a used truck to expand their business.
