Livelihoods for People with Disabilities

Location: Iganga and Luweero Districts, Uganda

Disabled people in Uganda often face high levels of marginalisation, due to stigmatization and the government’s inability to provide the required support. As a result people with disabilities often find it extremely difficult to earn income, and it is common that they are forced to beg for money and food to survive.

“596 men and women received support from this project, of whom 353 were living with a physical or mental disability. 164 people with a disability started a business.”

We believe that all people should be able to provide enough for themselves and for their families with dignity.

As a result, in 2012 we implemented this project to help people with disabilities and their families to become financially self-sufficient. This involved helping men, women and young people to learn the skills required to run a business. We also enabled them to work with others to establish Village Banks, so that they had a place to save money and access small loans and insurance, helping to establish a new level of financial security.
